Customer Showcase: Ben’s Tropical Freshwater Tank

At Somefin Fishy, we love seeing the incredible tanks our customers create, and today we’re spotlighting Ben’s stunning 100L tropical freshwater setup. This tank not only houses a vibrant mix of fish and shrimp but also showcases how the right equipment and decor can transform a home aquarium into a thriving underwater world.

Tank Inhabitants:

  • Albino Plec
  • Siamese Algae Eater
  • Neon Tetras
  • Glowlight Tetras
  • Zebra Corydoras
  • Red, Blue, and Yellow Shrimp

Equipment Used:

  • Tana Sand – The perfect substrate for a natural look and feel.
  • Aqua One Ocellaris Canister Filter – A powerful external filter to keep water crystal clear.
  • Heater and Aerator – Essential for maintaining optimal water temperature and oxygen levels.

Ben’s Setup: After a 30-year break from fishkeeping, Ben was eager to create a beautiful tank without going all-in on a massive setup just yet. His approach was thoughtful and intentional, carefully considering both the needs of his fish and the aesthetic he wanted in his home.

Originally, Ben’s tank had an asymmetrical layout, largely due to his initial Fluval filter taking up a lot of space. But after doing his homework and chatting with Andy at Somefin Fishy, he upgraded to the Aqua One Ocellaris Canister external filter. Not only did this free up tank space, but it also boosted the filtration process, ensuring a cleaner, healthier environment for his fish. This is a great example of how upgrading your equipment can dramatically improve your tank’s overall performance and appearance.

Ben chose the Sera heater after a cheaper one he bought elsewhere wasn’t keeping the tank at a consistent temperature and was starting to stress the fish out.

For decor, Ben opted for a Redmoor Log, which not only complements the tank’s natural look but also serves as a favourite hangout spot for his Albino Plec. This unique piece of wood provides a natural food source for the Plec and a resting place for the Siamese Algae Eater.

Ben’s choice of fast-growing plants provides plenty of hiding spots for his fish and shrimp. It’s clear that Ben’s tank is a lively ecosystem – his shrimp are even multiplying!

What’s Next for Ben’s Tank? As Ben’s Siamese Algae Eater continues to grow, he’s already planning his next step: upgrading to a larger tank and adding more livestock. He’s also considering diving into the world of tropical seawater with the Nano Reef 40 he’s seen in our shop – an exciting next chapter in his fishkeeping journey.

Client SetUp FAQs

Why should I invest in a decent heater for my tropical tank?2024-10-15T08:51:54+00:00

A high-quality heater is essential to keep your tropical tank at a stable temperature. Swings in temperature can stress your fish, leading to health issues and potentially costly mistakes. It’s not just about keeping your tank warm; it’s an animal welfare issue. You also need a heater you can rely on to last because if it breaks, the temperature could plummet, putting your fish at serious risk.

Some filters even come with built-in heating elements, which not only regulate the temperature but also keep your tank looking less cluttered. To ensure you get the right heater or thermostat for your specific setup, pop into our shop for expert advice. Visit us in-store to find the perfect heater for your tank and safeguard your fish’s health.

Why should I upgrade to an external filter for my tropical tank?2024-10-14T17:48:40+00:00

Upgrading to an external filter like the Aqua One 850 Ocellaris Canister Filter increases filtration capacity, keeps your water cleaner, and frees up space inside the tank for better aesthetics and a healthier environment for your fish. Drop into the shop to see how an external filter can help you.
